Welcome Message
Zakaria Mustafa, Lecturer
Head
Department of East Asian Studies, University of Malaya

zakaria05Hi, Welcome to this site, I am Zakaria. This site is dedicated to all activities of the Department of East Asian Studies. Be sure to take a look at our pictures, programs and student activities, and give us your feedback. We thank you in advance for your valuable response.

Please allow me to introduce our Department to you with a few of seconds. Over the past decade, University of Malaya has been recognized as the Malaysia’s leading university and center for area studies in the field of East Asian Studies. The university leadership is of the opinion that in order to enhance the quality of academic programs as well as research, internationalization, commonly referred to as inter-university cooperation, must be pursued. Hence, UM has been actively engaged in making agreements on academic exchanges with numerous international universities. Through the Department of East Asian Studies, at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, the university has initiated various types of academic collaborations with universities in China, Japan and Korea. Since 1996, these have involved student exchange programs, visiting professorship programs, study abroad schemes and summer camps, as well as the organization of international conferences and seminars. The university believes that  academic cooperation and networking with universities in the Northeast Asian region are essential in order to produce competitive graduates for the local as well as global job markets. Moreover, a degree in East Asian Studies is definitely an asset to our students in the job market as it spurs personal as well intellectual growth and provides international exposure for the younger members of the community.

In addition, unlike other programs in the university, programs at the Department of East Asian Studies contribute towards better self-esteem as students are given a lot of opportunities to learn one of the three most important languages in East Asia, that is Mandarin, Korean and Japanese, which will help them get employed in the local as well as global job markets. Apart from learning an East Asian language, students are exposed to East Asian economics, politics, business, culture and society. International academic cooperation allows students to equip themselves with first hand knowledge of the country that they are studying. In the long run, this experience alone enables our students to work with local as well as multinational corporations which need individuals who are proficient in these languages
